Ann Ross RSW

Ann Ross RSW Studied at Edinburgh College of Art and continues to live in the city. She is an elected member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. Her work is frequently exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, and various private galleries throughout Britain.

She has always been inspired by the world around her, at home or abroad. The memory of different experiences, cultures, weather, people, animals and wildlife, towns, buildings and landscape have all been recalled in her work. Working in waterbased media - pure watercolour, gouache or acrylic - she builds up layers of detail and rich colour to depict some of the beauty and detail of her world.

'I try to recall special moments in the world around me wherever I happen to be and try to fix those details in my mind and in sketchbooks. I use these drawings and recalled memories to make images in my studio using different water-based media, painted assemblage and collaged ephemera. I find painting in watercolour is a great adventure. Controlling the medium or letting it run free, knowing the different properties of the various pigments, allowing time in the studio to be aware of all the possibilities - these are all part of the exciting process of water based painting. Paper and pigment can become a journey into recalled light, colour, shape and pattern in nature or objects and incidents. The memory, recent or long past, is relived as I paint, draw or assemble. This last few years I have spent much time working, watching and listening in gardens and many of my recent works are visual memories of special moments involving the garden plants and visiting wildlife.'
