David Smith RSW

Born in 1957, David Smith is a Scottish Contemporary plein air landscape artist living and working just outside Glasgow. His love of the outdoors, and hillwalking, mountaineering and sailing in particular, has taken him all over the world, however the palette and inspiration for his work come from the seaboard and landscapes of Scotland. Painting and sketching en plein air allows him to capture the landscape and features in a natural light before completing works back at his studio.

Although predominantly a self-taught artist, he has studied at various colleges including the Glasgow Print Studio, Glasgow College of Building and Printing, Glasgow School of Art and Latrobe University, Melbourne, Australia.

David was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 2011 and has shown at annual exhibitions at the The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI), The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), The Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) and The Paisley Art Institute (PAI). In 2016 he became an Elected Member of the Council for the Scottish Artist's Benevolent Association.

His work is found in private, corporate and public collections throughout the UK and abroad including The House of Lords in London, the Swiss Consulate in Edinburgh, The Law Society of Scotland, the BBC Collection and Glasgow Caledonian University.

David has continually been recognised for his work throughout his career with recent awards including:
Fabriano Residency Award, RSW Annual Exhibition 2018, House for an Art Lover Award, Paisley Art Institute 129th Annual Exhibition 2017; The Rendezvous Gallery Artist in Residence Award, RSW 134th Annual Exhibition 2015; By Distinction Art Award, PAI 126th Annual Exhibition 2014; James B.
