Emma Nightingale

Emma was born in Blackheath, London in 1957 and at the age of three moved with her parents and younger sister back to the family home in Kent.

Emma discovered glass in her forties during a glass taster weekend at Liquid Glass near Bath recommended to her by a friend. Over time, alongside her demanding career as a civil servant, she continued to explore her love of glass, attending glass workshops and masterclasses, taking her learning back into her studio. Emma is naturally curious and glass making is a constant learning journey, with each day bringing new discoveries, some of which she develops further and others, by choice, she leaves behind.

Last year Emma spent a week with Amanda Simmons learning about the application of glass powder to create a finished form. Drawing on her learning, she created and launched her collection 'Serta' which was well received.

Emma has continued to develop her ideas and has recently created her first interiors collection 'Cromba'. The pieces have a functional edge, that work within interiors and are an inspiration and a delight to the beholder.

Five years ago Emma moved to the creative community of Cromarty on the Black Isle in the Highlands where she had spent many happy holidays as a child. She built a studio in her garden and now spend her time developing new ideas, some of which evolve into new collections, drawing her inspiration from the extraordinary landscape, its beautiful beaches, running water, stone and her love of plants and trees. The balance of design and texture and the way the light interacts with each element are central to her practice as is the way she brings these elements together as an artist into beautiful and desirable objects.
