Edinburgh-born Andrew studied ceramics at Gray's school of Art from 1974 to 1979, during which time he also completed a post-graduate year of study. Andrew's career has centred on making and teaching: he was head of art at a school in Birmingham concurrent to working as a potter. Andrew currently works in Lichfield in Staffordshire, where he set up his workshop in 1981. He makes individual and hand-built pieces in stoneware and porcelain, reduction fired to 1280 degrees Celsius.
The work on show is a range of thrown porcelain pieces in blue and white with cobalt slip decoration. The slip decoration is mostly applied at the green stage as a form of underglaze decoration. The slip is applied using a variety techniques, including sponging, slip trailing, masking, brushes, decals, and even fingers!
