Muriel Barclay

Muriel grew up in the West End of Glasgow, in a house filled with aunts, animals, and au pairs. She attended Park School for Girls and later went on to study at Edinburgh University. On leaving university, she headed south to work in a Mayfair Gallery before returning to Glasgow to teach history and raise her family. She managed to find time to study Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art and also took a Degree in History of Fine Art at The Open University. Encouraged by awards from the Paisley Art Institute, Glasgow Society of Women Artists, and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, Muriel left teaching in 2001 to pursue a career as a full time artist.

Painting in a contemporary style, many of Muriel's subjects are dancers and she approaches her painting with dynamism and energetic physicality as a direct response to her subject matter. It is an important partnership for her, fuelling the creative process and forcing her to re-examine the way she views movement and the human body - both sides committed to pushing their physical and creative limits.

Muriel has many successful solo shows to her credit. Her paintings hang in many public and private collections worldwide, including Ernie Els, Sir Arnold Clark, Lord Harris, Sultan of Brunei, Alex McLeish, and Sir Jack Harvey HBOS.
