Muriel grew up in the West End of Glasgow, in a house filled with aunts, animals, and au pairs. She attended Park School for Girls and later went on to study at Edinburgh University. On leaving university, she headed south to work in a Mayfair Gallery before returning to Glasgow to teach history and raise her family. She managed to find time to study Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art and also took a Degree in History of Fine Art at The Open University. Encouraged by awards from the Paisley Art Institute, Glasgow Society of Women Artists, and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, Muriel left teaching in 2001 to pursue a career as a full time artist.
Painting in a contemporary style, many of Muriel's subjects are dancers and she approaches her painting with dynamism and energetic physicality as a direct response to her subject matter.
