Annie Hewett

Annie studied Graphic Design at St. Martin's School of Art between 1969-72 and then went on to complete her Post-Graduate year at Bristol University.

From then until 2000 she taught in secondary schools and at Stroud College of Art, Gloucestershire. She also worked on free-lance projects within a varied field of design including small private commissions and large commercial ones. She studied calligraphy after art school and has worked with large scale inscriptional projects, using very varied materials, ranging from directly painted work to cut and welded metals for clients as far apart in concept as municipal offices and cruise liners.

Arthritis in her hands increasingly hampered her lettering work and a consultant suggested working with clay might relieve some pain and stiffness. Since 2001 Annie has been working with clay.

"I use white earthenware clay and coloured slips, yellow for the interiors and a strong cobalt slip for the outsides through which I scratch, draw and cut away, much as in the tradition of linocuts, to create my designs. Lettering often forms an integral part of my work."

"The work of printmakers and  textile designers provides much of my inspiration as does my continuing interest in plant forms and typography."
