Lara Scobie

Lara studied at Camberwell School of Art, London, graduating with Honours in Ceramics. She then came to Scotland and completed a Post Graduate course at Edinburgh College of Art. She has exhibited work extensively in the U.K and overseas and has work in public and private collections around the world.

In 1992 Lara was the Premier winner of the New Zealand Fletcher Challenge Ceramic Award (an internationally acclaimed award). This led to her visiting New Zealand to collect the Award and she also spent some time demonstrating her techniques as she toured around the country. In May 1993 she took part in an International Porcelain Workshop in Prague where she met and worked alongside some of Europe's leading Porcelain Ceramists, who she later toured with across the U.S.

Since taking timeout to start a family, Lara's work has taken a new direction that has been further developed through the generous assistance of the Scottish Arts Council, who awarded her a Creative Development Grant in 2007. Lara set up her studio at the Adam Pottery, Edinburgh. She also works part-time as a Lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. Her work can be seen throughout the U.K. and has been shown further a field in New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and Czechoslovakia. Lara works in both porcelain and stoneware clay and her intricately modelled vessels draw on a universality of inspiration. Her recent work explores the dynamics of simple, clear form, and the interplay of pattern, drawing and mark making on a 3-dimentional plane. The colours and patterns are developed through Botanical studies and forms observed in the natural world. All work is hand-built in Stoneware and Bone China clay and decorated with coloured Porcelain slip, and the surfaces are finished by diamond polishing.
