Gail Pope

Gail Pope was born in 1957 in Dundee. She showed a natural instinct for drawing and painting as a child and won a number of prizes and awards for her art while at school. To the frustration of her art teachers, for family reasons she was unable to follow art as a career and go on to Art College at the time, instead opting to take up employment in banking.

With marriage and career moves Gail moved home a number of times throughout Scotland and spent a few years in Glasgow where she attended part time studies at Glasgow School of Art. Her painting at that time was very much a hobby although she was receiving regular commission work from those who were able to view her work at home.

Several years ago Gail moved to East Lothian and returned to her love of painting on an ever increasing basis, latterly receiving encouragement and coaching from well known Scottish painters Ann Oram and George Birrell.

The Dutch masters and the Scottish colourists, especially in the genre of still life works where dark backgrounds and compositional skills are to the fore, heavily influence her painting style. She also admires greatly the simplicity of Mary Fedden's work and the technique of Jack Morocco both of who have an influence on Gail's painting of certain subject matter.

Gail started painting full time as demand for her work grew, principally through commissions and she began exhibiting with us on a regular basis in 2009.
