Douglas Roulston
Abandoned Croft, Jura
Oil on Canvas
Born in Glasgow in 1984, Douglas was awarded a BA (Hons) followed by a Master of Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 2008. In 2013, he continued his studies with a PDGE in Art and Design and now works part time as an Art teacher in the East of Scotland, whilst also concentrating on his painting. Douglas currently lives in Broughty Ferry with his wife and 2 children.
During his degree, Douglas studied the works of 19th Century Romantic artists, who first portrayed the picturesque scenery of areas like Glencoe and Loch Katrine and he has been influenced by their depictions ever since. When creating his work, he uses his imagination to convey the intensity and majesty of the Scottish landscape and weather, by exaggerating rugged rock faces and depicting turbulent skies with piercing light rays through breaking clouds. Painting in oil and acrylics, his lively paintings often also feature stormy, tempestuous seas.
