Valerie started painting in 1990 whilst working in Market Research and attended evening classes at Hospitalfield House, Abroath. In 1995, at the age of 50, she entered Angus College to develop her portfolio, before being accepted to study at Duncan of Jordanston College of Art and Design, Dundee in 1996.
She graduated in 2000 with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art, Drawing and Painting, and her distinctive figurative work has since attracted considerable interest. She has exhibited throughout Scotland, Dublin and London. This includes the Affordable Art Fair, London for the past 5 years, and also at the Glasgow Art Fair in 2006.
"I am influenced by the dramatic and powerful effects of light on face or figure. There is something mysterious and mystical about the figure emerging from, or sinking into the shadows. In chiaroscuro painting, the eye follows the light. The light gives a picture its flow. It takes the eye from one place to another and the shadows give structure to the painting."
