george birrell
George studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1967-71 graduating with a Diploma of Art in Drawing & Painting. From 1972-80 he taught art at schools and between 1985-98 he lectured in Art and Design in Further Education Establishments. He obtained a National Diploma in Calligraphy in 1996. Since 1998, George has worked full-time as an artist and photographer. His work has been shown widely throughout Scotland and also in England and New York.
George has a strong interest in architecture, the spirit of East Coast towns and fishing villages of Scotland and the evidence of the "hand of man" on the landscape. Working predominantly in oil colour, recent developments include the use of saturated colour, vigorous handling and strong design, a sense of underlying abstract structure.
