lorraine robson

Lorraine was born in Edinburgh in 1962. She spent some years working as a Cartographer before studying Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art from 1984-88, graduating with a B.A.(Hons). She is a Member of the Scottish Artists and Artist Craftsmen Association and the Association of Applied Arts.

After graduating she worked for a Commercial Studio producing figures in fibreglass to commission. During this period  her own Sculpture developed in plaster, fibreglass and cold cast metals using forms abstracted from childhood games, primitive tools and museum objects. This work was widely exhibited in Scotland in galleries such as the Collective, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Fruitmarket Gallery.

In 1994, Lorraine made some experiments with ceramics that led to her turning almost exclusively to this medium. She now produces pots and vessels in glazed earthenware preferring to hand build each one, using the ancient and time consuming method of coiling clay, building each layer and burnishing rather than throwing them. The motifs and forms used in her ceramic work come indirectly from concerns in her sculptural work but disciplined by the need to make a functional object.

"One reoccurring theme in my art comes from my obsession in the fetish character of objects; how they can possess power that can awe the viewer and how that power can convey status upon its owner. We as a society worship material objects supposed to have inherent power. However, ultimately the power and value of these objects is attached to them by us as human beings. It’s this ambivalence that I continue to explore in much of my work."
