shona fidgett

Shona was born in 1972 and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee from 1994-97 graduating with B. Des (Hons) in Jewellery & Metalwork - 1st Class.  While at college, she was awarded the Cardonald College Class prize in 1994 and in the same year was runner-up in the Design Council/SCOTVEC trophy competition.  Shona was later commissioned to make trophies for the SCOTVEC Chairman and the Patron of SCOTVEC, HRH Prince Philip.  In 1997, she was awarded The Strathearn Gallery prize for Jewellery.  Her work was selected for the New Designers Exhibition in London.

She also initiated a student exchange programme between Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and San Diego State University.  During 1995/96 two students from each institution took part and Shona spent five months in San Diego under the supervision of Arline Fisch and Helen Shirk.

Shona's work is based upon interiors and the creation of space with precious detailing. Through visits to Istanbul and Morocco, and using architecture as her resource, she tries to recreate the intriguing precious interiors she has seen by playing with light to give the illusion of depth to her pieces.  Shona's aim is to draw the viewer in closer to investigate the work more closely.  She works predominately in silver, using 18 carat gold leaf for detailing.  She also uses a mixture of base metals in the detail and inlay.
