douglas matheson

Raised in Musselburgh, Douglas started his artistic career working in advertising.  He later enrolled at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee, where he achieved his diploma in Drawing and Painting. Douglas then began training to be a teacher of art and design, and later a member of staff at Hermitage Academy, Helensburgh. In 1987 he was appointed Advisor in Art and Design for Central Region, retiring in 1990.

Once retired, Douglas took up art as his singular profession.  In recent years his subject matter has changed from still lifes to landscapes and the environment, mostly Scottish.  In these pieces he also focuses on man’s relationship and interaction with his surroundings. He works mostly in acrylic and mixed media, using a variety of techniques whilst also continually  refreshing his approach.  Douglas’ style in his work has become looser and less precise as its has developed.
