Peter studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at Padgate College, Warrington from 1990-93, gaining a City and Guilds in Silversmithing and Fine Jewellery.  He moved to Orkney in 1993 and established Hrossey Silver and works primarily on commissioned pieces through his own gallery as well as a range of silverware and fine jewellery.

He uses gold, silver, bronze, brass, copper, wood, precious and semi-precious stones and is skilled in a wide variety of techniques and processes, including Mokume Gane, Repousse, Raising, Chasing, Engraving and Inlay.

“I came into silversmithing quite late in life; not through the normal channels of school and college, but through the jewellery trade, working with a jobbing Jeweller.  With him I learned the basics of fine jewellery making and production casting, the backbone of the jewellery trade.  This came to an end when the Jeweller sold his business, I bought his tools and equipment and decided to go to college.  There I took up silversmithing and developed my own designs and ideas.  At the end of the three year course, my wife and I and our young daughter moved to Orkney to start our business.

A great deal of my work is inspired by my surroundings.  Much of what I make tends to be things that I like or want to make or I find of interest.  I’m easily bored by repetition, liking the challenge of new work, so I prefer to make ‘one off’ pieces or limited editions.  I am also a great believer in the designer making as much as possible, so I am continuously pushing into new skills and areas of interest; much as the early medieval smiths would have done.  Otherwise it is easy to become little more than an assembly worker and I find no pleasure in that.”
