suzanne stuart davies

Suzanne attended Liverpool College of Art, qualifying and working as an art teacher.  She also has a degree in Philosophy and History of Art from the Open University.

She has always been interested in the ways people throughout history have adapted, lived, worked and built shelters in often harsh, difficult but beautiful terrain.  Suzanne prefers to use a range of media and methods to record ideas, including photography, making notes, rather than only drawing and painting.  Studio work consists of sifting the information and images she’s collected and then making more drawings and studies, leading to the beginning of paintings.

“I have lived in Dumfries and Galloway for ten years, visiting Ireland and the islands of the Hebrides regularly.  A significant preoccupation has always been what is known as 'spirit of place'.  The place where I live and the places travelled through inevitably affect the paintings I do.  Observation, memory and thoughts combine.  The series I am working on determines to some extent the way the paintings develop.  Painting in oil is a slow process, allowing time to think and reconsider; layering colour and texture with brushes and knives, scraping back, adding more until the work seems finished.”
