john nelson
John was born in Edinburgh and studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1962-67. During his time at Art College, John achieved a Grant Scholarship which took him to Paris and Belgium whilst also providing opportunities to exhibit his paintings there. From 1971-1996 he was an Art lecturer at Stevenson College, Edinburgh.
Now living in the Scottish Borders he continues to develop his painting to his own exact standards. John has shown his work throughout Scotland and also in the rest of the UK, the Continent and Canada. He has work in many private and public exhibitions.
“I would describe my work as bright, colourful abstracts with figurative elements routed in traditional genres, still life, portraits, landscape, etc, although meeting in a variety of guises – at times supported by the use of numbers or graffiti where appropriate.
In my recent paintings, the “Ocean Series”, I have been using a different compositional arrangement. Ideas inform these images and, although archetypes float to the surface of my vision, I am appropriately suspicious of any literary element and cautious of pursuing the archetypal. I don’t research my motives, it’s more that I am lucky, and they find me.
I have no special “build-up” system; I may do a lot of sketches before reflecting in the studio, but I work directly on the canvas, with no preparatory drawing on it. Something emerges which I follow and shape…I don’t think, I paint.”
