christine milne

Christine lives in South West Scotland and works in an isolated studio overlooking the Urr Estuary.  The coastal location provides the basis for her work and inspiration.  Christine describes her work as abstract landscape and although not always associated directly with particular places, paintings relate in colour, form and texture to the sky, sea, land and patterns in the natural environment.

Her work is created in much the same way as water creates our landscape, with its intricate patterns and textures shared at every level from mountain ranges to a pebble on the beach.  By this Christine is referring specifically to the way in which the paintings are made.

Once the canvas is stretched and primed, it is placed horizontally on the studio floor.  Here the oil paint is applied and the canvas is manipulated, tilted, rocked and up ended.  The paint is made to flow and move, but with elements of chance and the unexpected.  Christine usually works on a number of canvases at any given time due to the slow drying nature of the paint and the techniques used.  Some of the same laws which govern processes in the external environment are at work in the painting process, those of gravity and the behaviour of liquids amongst them.

Christine graduated from Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen in 1996, and has exhibited as an invited artist at the Society of Scottish Artists.  Selected exhibitions include: Oxo Tower, London; Visual Arts Scotland, Edinburgh; The Lund Gallery, Easingwold; Engender – National Touring Exhibition. Collections include: The Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh; Art in Hospitals, Scotland; Assitalia, London/Birmingham; Gracefield Arts Centre; Dumfries.  She was also awarded the John Kinross Scholarship to Florence.  Since 2004 Christine has been glass blowing in addition to painting.
