james curley

James takes inspiration for his art from two main sources; the natural world in its shapes, textures and tones and the engineering world with its geometry, industry and craftsmanship. In some of his works he has combined these two elements of by exploring the juxtapositions and harmonies between them. Having lived most of his life in the countryside, James is always drawn to the shapes and patterns nature can offer, providing him with infinite possibilities and ideas. Trees, birds, animals and forests are some of the many elements of nature that have given him inspiration. Since 2008 James’ work has been shown in and around Scotland. He has also completed various private commissions in Perthshire, which include ‘Slate Sculpture’ and ‘Fant’, which is an amorphous shape reminiscent of an elephant’s trunk. He admits to being skilled and equally comfortable in metal engineering and cabinet making, showing in many of his sculptures. However, James constantly feels the need to challenge himself by learning about new materials and how best to use them.

"From this year on I am aiming to create more substantial sculptures which would give me the opportunity to really show my capabilities as an artist, working on a much larger scale and taking my work to the next level."
