robert saunders

Born in Paisley in 1950, Robert trained at Glasgow School of Art, followed by a period of specialist study with Sotheby’s London.  During his early career he was Art Director at Paisley Museum and Art Galleries where Paisley’s rich collection of textiles and costumes highlighted his interest in fashion and the decorative arts.

He has travelled extensively to Europe, the USA and the Far East, curating the first major exhibition of Scottish landscape painting to travel to Japan in 1983, being invited to return to Japan in the 1990s to exhibit textiles.  Robert has had work published by the National Gallery of Decorative Arts in Finland and has exhibited at Scotfest and Art Expo in New York.

Robert has exhibited in a number of one man shows in the UK and abroad, with works in several private collections in the USA, Europe & Japan.  He was also commissioned by Royal Carribean Cruise Line in Scandinavia.

Robert has built a reputation as a fine painter of women on the cusp of self knowledge.  He portrays them in intimate environments, knowingly aware of their own sensuality, yet alienated and distant their thoughts apparently elsewhere.

While he has a style which is unmistakably his own, one can readily see hints of other artists’ formative influences, but predominately one can see in the sparing austerity of colour and form, what one associates with leading 20th Century Scottish artists such as F. C. B. Cadell.
