katie sweeney
Katie was born in Edinburgh in 1985 and lived in Dunfermline until moving to Glasgow to study Fine Art. She graduated in 2008 with First Class Honours and remains in Glasgow as a practicing artist.
Her inspiration comes from experiences; her boots and kayak give her unparalleled access to Scotland's wildest places. It is here, surrounded by dramatic scenery and the changing elements, that her ideas are formed. Through painting she tries to encapsulate the natural detail of landscapes and its ever-changing moods. Katie's paintings romanticize the Scottish landscape, which she sees as a sublime paradise. Influences to her work can be seen in the work of John Martin, Caspar David Friedrich and Albert Bierstadt.
"My paintings have a smooth, flat finish, with minimal brush-marks. The surface is created using traditional glazing techniques, inspired by the Old Masters. My technique concentrates on forming an image through detail, colour and light."
