dawn wood

Dawn was born in Omagh, County Tyrone. She studied at Queens' University in Belfast before moving to Dundee in 1986.  All of her academic training is science-related and she currently works as a science lecturer at the University of Abertay, Dundee.  Although her background education and employment is within traditional science, Dawn also excels in the arts.

She is a self-trained artist, with her subjects drawn from the natural world – birds and animals, particularly dogs and horses.  One of Dawn's major benefits is being able to study the taxidermy collection at the Barrack Street Museum in Dundee.  Besides being an artist, she also writes poetry.  Her first collection was published in 2008 by Templar Poetry in Derbyshire and was also short-listed for the Aldeburgh first collection prize.

"To me, all of these activities – art, science and poetry – are aspects of natural philosophy – all depend on the same reciprocal, creative inclination involving the artist, the subject and the medium."
