melanie williamson
Having fallen in love with Scotland on a visit from her native Australia eight years ago, Melanie moved halfway across the world to explore the natural landscape that continues to captivate her.
Her paintings are inspired by the sometimes dramatic, often beautiful scenery that is found in Scotland. She strongly believes that the seasons north of the border boast a range of colour unrivalled in any natural pallete. Melanie builds up her paintings with colour using oil and pure pigment, and enhances the landscapes through the use of pure bees' wax. This technique gives the paintings more depth and texture.
Working primarily on land and seascapes that can be found around the Scottish coast and the Cairngorms, Melanie's paintings are influenced more by the memory of how she felt whilst there rather than the realistic replication of place. Therefore she uses sketches and photographs as a reference to the feelings and colour that she was initially attracted to.
Melanie studied painting at Leith School of Art in 2004, although she previously studied Printmaking in Melbourne, Australia in 1990. Her work has been exhibited in and around the UK, including the Oisin Gallery in Dublin.
"One of the best compliments that I have ever been paid was that my paintings allowed the viewer to smell the season."
