christopher wood
Christopher trained at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating with an Honours degree in Drawing & Painting in 1984. He has been a full-time professional artist since his first one-man exhibition in Edinburgh 1987.
For the past few years now Christopher has worked in an increasingly abstract format. He readily admits to the early inspiration of Nicholas de Stael and, while it has taken a little time to reach a place where he feels comfortable, it is equally clear that such historical reference is no longer essential. His idea is that while paint is a means of self expression, it is also an agent of self-discovery. Christopher admits that his chief sources of inspiration are profoundly personal, ranging from the birth of his first child, three and a half years ago, to a recent bereavement.
In 2006 Christopher was elected Vice-President of the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) (2006-2008), and is an elected member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW). In 1993 he became a member of the Visual Arts Scotland (VAS), whilst also winning The James Torrance Memorial Award the same year. Christopher’s work is held in many collections; including the Bank of Scotland, United Distillers, Edinburgh University, Lennox Lewis, The Demarco European Foundation, Petro-Canada London and many other private and corporate collections around the world. Currently he lives and works in the coastal town of Dunbar, near Edinburgh.
