kirsty lorenz
“Flowers mean different things to different people ... to me they are the secret of the cosmos “ Winifred Nicholson
Kirsty’s work is solely about capturing the distinguishing elements of flowers through her paintings. She received a BA Joint Honours 2:1 in Art and Art History from Goldsmiths College, London where she studied from 1989 - 1992. Her work is predominantly in oil on canvas.
She focuses on looking at each flower as ‘an individual being’ on a sometimes large scale and is therefore able to show the smallest details and subtle colour changes. Through them she feels that she can express something fundamental about life and living. When the flowers are translated into paintings they become uber-flowers; near perfect and sometimes to monumental scale. Some of the flowers that she has painted are just 2mm in size. Recently Kirsty has been painting wild Scottish flowers, the types that grow all around unbidden, from the majestic Foxglove to the tiny forget-me-nots.
Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK, and is currently begun a project with the working title of ‘Carnal’. This is an exploration of the darker side of plant life, carnivorous plants, and she enjoys their metaphorical potential. This is in collaboration Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh which has an excellent collection of carnivorous plants.
“I like the idea that flowers are a bit like us in that they are a particular breed but are all individual and go through different life stages. It’s unbelievable how stunning wild flowers are, I like their humility and strength. I hugely enjoy translating their images into my own style of painting, monumentalising them and celebrating the wonder of them. There seems an endless variety of them and I will continue to paint them for a long time to come.”
