jenny mason

Jenny is an Edinburgh based painter who is inspired by the wildness and brooding of the Scottish landscape.  In 1997 Jenny completed a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Lancaster University, and in 2006 an MDes in Textile Design with Computer Applications at Heriot Watt University.

She works predominantly in oils or pastels and is concerned with capturing a mood or ambiguity that a landscape may suggest, using her medium to create a soft painterly surface.  The surface of Jenny’s work is subtle with a soft hazy quality as she works the paint in a dry, sfumato manner.  She seeks to capture the ambiguous qualities of light on water and landscape, in conjunction with the scene’s feeling and atmosphere.

Her current work is based on the landscape of North West Scotland, Sutherland and the Isle of Skye.

“I am influenced by romantic painters including Claude Monet, Christopher Le Brun and Whistler, whose famous statement underpins my intentions”:
“Paint should not be applied thick, it should be like a breath on the surface of a pane of glass”.
