robert Mcaulay
Robert was born in a wee tenement room in the Castlemilk Housing Scheme on the South side of Glasgow in1961. He did not enjoy his years at school but despite this, studied for a number of Highers and was encouraged by his art teacher to apply to Glasgow School of Art. At the completion of his Highers he decided to opt out of further education to find work. He started an apprenticeship in his uncle’s small upholstery business, learning to refurbish antique furniture. He stayed with his uncle’s business for 5 years whilst drawing and painting in his spare time.
In 1983 he left his uncle’s business and began a diploma course in Art & Design at Cardonald College, Glasgow. Since completing this course he has taken up painting on a full-time basis. His first solo exhibition was at a friend'’s flat, in the West-end of Glasgow. The show was a success and gave him the confidence to pursue his career as an artist.
Robert has shown his work in many exhibitions throughout the UK and as far as New York.
“As always with the majority of my work the places depicted are not factual representations. My paintings are not about one particular place or event but are built up from many experiences; thoughts and images from memory, and these memories can be years old. Therefore it is fair to say artistic license comes into play with much of my work. Colour and texture are important and very pleasurable to me, sometimes becoming more so than the subject.”
“The subject matter of my work may vary, however there is always an underlying narrative within each painting: Human nature, how people relate to one another in their communities and beyond. For me it is not important to create factual images as I hope the viewer will bring their own stories to the pictures.”
“As a child I would spend hours at the living room window of our house in Glasgow. In the winter evenings when it got dark early and lights were on in neighbours houses I would look from window to window - every now and then a figure would pass, a light would come on and another go off. In my childish mind I fantasized that I was part of their lives, I always assumed their homes were happier, more exciting than mine. Some maybe were, but many more weren't.”
”As an adult this fascination with people continues, but I have little interest in the lives of celebrities or the rich and famous, rather it's the lives of ordinary people I am interested in and the things that happen to them or because of them.”
