Born in South Wales 1969, Julian studied at Duncan of Jordanstone Art College in Dundee achieving a Bachelor of Art with Honours in Ceramic Design in 1991.  In 1993 he established himself as self-employed ceramic sculptor with the aid of the Princes Scottish Youth Business Trust, Shepley Shepley Trust and Clydesdale bank.  Over the next 5 years Julian participated in a number of gallery exhibitions, craft shows and trade fairs throughout Scotland.  As a freelance sculptor he also produced limited editions for clients that were made from ceramics, wax, cement, resin and plaster.

While exhibiting at the International Autumn Fair in 1993, Julian presented HRH Prince Charles with a sculpture based on his book "The Old Man of Lochnagar" which is now kept in St James's Palace.  Some time later he travelled to Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, as an artist in residence at Worcester Centre for Crafts. While there he developed his work, participated in a few exhibitions and taught ceramic sculpturing to both adults and children.  In 1999 Julian returned to the UK and over the next six years worked as a full-time 3D graphic artist for a couple of computer games companies based in Dundee.  During this time Julian's ceramics were limited to occasional commissions, but in 2006 he re-established himself as a self-employed ceramic sculptor and currently lives and works in Perth.  Some of his free lance commissions include the Whipsnade Zoo, England, The Orang-Utan Foundation, UK, and Small World, Nairn, Scotland.  Since restarting Julian has also undertaken a number of commissions for Wizards of the Coast, Hasbro and Upper Deck Entertainment producing trophies for their respective games.  These include trophies for European Grand Prix events for Magic the Gathering, the Magic Great British Nationals, European Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures championships, and the Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures UK championships.  Work for Upper Deck has included a number of trophies based on Marvel and DC Comic characters.

His work is featured in the following publications; The Encyclopaedia of Fantasy & Science Fiction Art Techniques by John Grant & Ron Tiner, 20th Century British Studio Potters & Their Marks (Ceramics) by Eric Yates-Owen & Robert Fournier and 20th Century British Studio Potters` Marks by Eric Yates-Owen & Robert Fournier.

"My work is created as hollow form sculpting using a technique I developed at Art College not dissimilar to coil building or pinch potting.  The animals are gradually built up with clay pinched out to about 0.5cm thick and then sealed over to create a trapped bubble of air which adds strength to the piece during modelling.  This allows pressure to be applied while adding detail both by sculpting in to the clay with tools and adding additional features like horns, ears and tails.  Once complete the sculpture is pin pricked in various places before being left to dry. I fire to about 1080c and once fired the pieces are undercoated and finished in a number of layers of acrylic paint.

I use a variety of things to source out new ideas from wildlife magazines and documentaries to the internet.  Over the past 14 years I have created a huge array of animals from the exotic to the endangered, simply finding images that I find inspiring and working from there.  The animals created are based partly on the researched images and partly on how I perceive the animals from watching them either in real life or in documentaries.  On many occasions the finished sculpture shows some human characteristic such as tiredness, pride, or ill temper."
